In 2013, British actor David Suchet directed the final TV episodes of Agatha Christie’s popular Belgian detective Hercule Poirot and also starred in a play. Between these projects, he took on “the roll of his life”: an audio version he recorded of the entire Bible, from Genesis to Revelation – 752,702 words, for over 200 hours.

Suchet, who came to believe in Jesus after reading Romans in a hotel Bible, described the project as the fulfillment of “a 27-year ambition. I felt totally driven. I did so much research I couldn’t wait to get started.” After that, he donated his earnings.

His record remains an inspiring example of how to glorify God by cultivating a gift and then sharing it with others. Peter urges first-century believers to such stewardship in his epistle. Persecuted for worshiping Jesus and not Caesar, they are asked to focus on living for God and cultivating their spiritual gifts. “When anyone speaks, let him speak as if God Himself were speaking through him” (verse 11). As with all gifts, we can encourage them so that “God may be glorified in all things through Jesus Christ.”

Suchet offered his gifts to God. We can do that too. Whatever God has given you, steward it well for His glory.

How would you describe your God-given talents and spiritual gifts? What can you do to steward them for God’s glory?
